It’s no secret that Arsenal are looking to strengthen both wing and attacking positions this summer. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club is ready to invest heavily in the right players.
On the wing, Arsenal are looking for an upgrade on the left to compete with Gabriel Martinelli.
Nico Williams – from dream signing to Madrid candidate
Arsenal’s first choice for a long time was Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, according to both the BBC and the Telegraph. But now Marca reports that Real Madrid have entered the race for Williams, after considering that his buyout clause of €58 million is too good to pass up.
But with Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappé and Rodrygo as permanent fixtures at the top, it begs the question: Where will Williams play?
According to Marca, Madrid will only sign Williams if a big seller disappears – and Rodrygo is the leading candidate to leave.
Rodrygo feels marginalized after Mbappé’s arrival
Rodrygo is said to feel like “the fifth wheel on the bandwagon” after Mbappé’s transfer, and has often had to give way when coach Carlo Ancelotti has preferred an extra midfielder.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Rodrygo could now be sold to Arsenal to make room for Williams:
Expected transfer fee: Up to £100 million
Rodrygo (24) is in his prime and has already won 3 La Liga titles and 2 Champions League trophies. With a contract until 2028, Madrid have no pressure to sell him cheaply.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, the price would be at least £70 million, but Madrid could hold out for close to £100 million.
Arsenal’s current record purchase is Declan Rice (£105 million) – a transfer for Rodrygo will approach that amount.
Rodrygo has played mostly on the right wing in Madrid because of Vinicius Jr on the left. But he’s right-footed, which makes him a more natural inverted left winger – perfect for creating chances from Arsenal’s left. ⚽
