Patrick Vieira has resigned as manager of Genoa by mutual consent. They are bottom of Serie A without having won a single league game this season.

A brief statement from the club said that Vieira was “no longer the coach of the first team”.

A source close to Vieira, 49, told BBC Sport that he began talks with the club on Friday night, where both parties agreed to part ways.

After joining Genoa as number 17 in the Italian top flight, Vieira won eight and drew nine of their 26 games last season, leading them to a safe 13th place.

However, his only two wins this season have come in the Coppa Italia, with six defeats in nine games – including five in the last six – in Serie A. “The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wish them all the best in their future careers”

The team, where Norwegians Morten Thorsby and Leo Østigård (on loan from Rennes) play, will be temporarily led by Roberto Murgita. Emil Bohinen also belongs to Genoa, but is currently on loan to Venice.

During his playing career, midfielder Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, as well as silverware with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Vieira retired in 2011 and became manager of New York City in 2016.

He returned to Europe with Nice and led them to seventh place in Ligue 1 in his first season, but was sacked in December 2020.

Vieira became Crystal Palace manager in 2021 and led them to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

He was sacked in 2023 after a 12-game winless streak, before joining RC Strasbourg as their first hire following an acquisition by BlueCo, the company that owns Chelsea. He left Strasbourg by mutual consent in July 2024.

Vieira took over as coach in November last year, when Genoa were in 17th place. The Frenchman’s arrival gave a temporary boost, but the end of the season was weak, and the club eventually finished in 13th place.

As a player, Vieira is best known for his years at Arsenal. He was captain when the London club went unbeaten throughout the 2003/04 Premier League season. He won three league championships in England, and became both world champion and European champion with the French national team.

Previously, Vieira has been the head coach of New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.
