Arsenal’s summer transfer plans have just taken an unexpected turn for rivals Chelsea. Mikel Artetas is chasing a player who has recently been referred to as “the best in the world”.
Arteta’s main goal in the transfer window is to secure a new striker and winger, with Viktor Gyökeres and Nico Williams on the radar for these positions respectively. But Arsenal also want to strengthen their midfield, especially considering that Thomas Partey and Jorginho are expected to leave the club for free this summer.

Now the Gunners are being linked with Andrey Santos, the Chelsea midfielder who has impressed on loan at Strasbourg. There, he has become one of Ligue 1’s top players, and it is believed that a deal could be made for around €45-50 million.
AndreySantos has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Champions League finalist PSG, who are also keen to sign the 20-year-old.
Surprising transfer underway?
Fabrizio Romano has previously confirmed that Chelsea’s plan is to bring the youngster back to Stamford Bridge, at least initially. It would be a huge shock if Chelsea approved a transfer of such a promising player to a direct competitor.
Santos is highly valued at Strasbourg, but even if they qualify for the Champions League next season, keeping him on loan could be complicated. If Chelsea also reach the Champions League, it will be difficult for the clubs to loan players to each other as they have done this season.
But as so often else, what a player wants plays a big role. – If Andrey Santos is “locked” to Chelsea at the same time as he wants to be somewhere else, his delivery on the pitch quickly deteriorates.
“The best player in the world”
He is the best player in the world,” declared Diego Moreira after Strasbourg’s 2-1 win over Toulouse in March. RC Strasbourg is in 6th place in Ligue 1, which means playing in Europe next season.
Strasbourg’s man Liam Rosenior has also showered him with praise and stated after the same game:
“He is one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1. He is present in both boxes, wins many duels, and his technique and decision-making bring a lot to the team. He has a really strong work ethic on a daily basis.”
Chelsea face a difficult choice
Chelsea would be wise to do everything they can to secure Andrey Santos’ future. But if Arsenal make a big offer, it could be difficult to say no.
