Alvarez on his way out – Greenwood in?

Atlético Madrid are working behind the scenes to target Marseille striker Mason Greenwood as a possible replacement for Julian Alvarez, and this could be great news for his former club Manchester United.

As our sources have previously reported, Alvarez is ready to leave the Metropolitano in the summer. The Argentine is considering his options before the transfer window opens, and Barcelona is said to be his preferred destination. However, the former Manchester City player is also open to a return to the Premier League, with both Arsenal and Chelsea monitoring the situation closely.

Julian Alvarez has won the World Cup with Argentina and twice the Premier League and once the Champions League trophy with Manchester City. – The striker has until recently been preferred over the Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth.

With uncertainty over Alvarez’s future, Atlético have started to explore possible reinforcements – and Greenwood is high on his wish list.

Sources confirm to TEAMtalk that the former United player is ranked “high” on Atlético’s shortlist if Alvarez disappears.

Strong season in Marseille

Greenwood left Old Trafford and signed permanently for Marseille in the summer of 2024, after a successful season-long loan at Getafe. The transfer came after serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. An internal investigation at United concluded that Greenwood would never play for the club again.

The 24-year-old has had an outstanding season at Marseille and established himself as one of Europe’s most goal-scoring strikers. He tops the scoring charts in France with 15 goals in 25 league games, and his performances are attracting attention across the continent.

Atlético have been following his development closely throughout the season and are continuously gathering information as they assess their options ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United can earn big

United are also eagerly following developments. As TEAMtalk has previously revealed, the Old Trafford club negotiated a 50 percent resale clause when Greenwood was sold to Marseille. This means that they will get half of the profit if the French sell him on.

Marseille paid €31.6 million for Greenwood. His value has since increased considerably, and with a contract until 2029, the Ligue 1 club is in a good position to demand a significant sum for his services.

With ever-increasing added value after an impressive season, Greenwood is expected to attract a lot of interest in the summer – and Atlético Madrid could be one of the main players if Alvarez completes his expected farewell.

A number of Premier League clubs are also following Greenwood, but it remains to be seen whether anyone will take the step of bringing him back to England in a potentially controversial transfer.
