After losing in Tokyo, Hubert Hurkacz complicated his situation in the race to advance to the ATP Finals. He unexpectedly received help from Casper Ruud, who also prematurely dropped out of the tournament in Tokyo. Therefore, he did not increase his advantage over the Pole in the race for a place in the season finals.
The eight best players in a given cycle get to the ATP Finals tournament, which is the culmination of the season. They work for this promotion throughout the year. Tennis players fight for the right to take part in the event, collecting points from their matches towards the ATP Race ranking. It is this ranking that determines who gets to take part in the ATP Finals. The first eight tennis players on this list can take part in the season finals. At the moment, Hubert Hurkacz is 11th in this classification, but he is hot on the heels of ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz and tenth-seeded Casper Ruud. The latter also helped the Pole advance a bit.
Currently, the following people will advance to the ATP Finals: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune. Just outside the lucky eight are: Taylor Fritz (no. 9), Casper Ruud (no. 10) and Hubert Hurkacz (no. 11). However, the point difference between places No. 5 and No. 11 in the ranking is so small that all players from these positions still have a chance to advance to the ATP Finals. The score between Fritz, Ruud and Hurkacz is particularly interesting, because their difference is so small that two or three matches are enough for changes in these positions. However, there are fewer and fewer opportunities to score points.
Yesterday Casper Ruud was eliminated from the tournament in Tokyo just as quickly, because thanks to Hurkacz he did not lose the points. Ruud only has 40 points. Hurkacz is able to make up for this loss in his next match, provided that he finishes higher than Ruud in a given place.
Taylor Fritz, ninth, is still playing in Japan, and Holger Rune, eighth, is still playing in Stockholm. The difference between Hurkacz and the eighth place may therefore increase even further. However, there is still some ground to be made up if Hurkacz shows his best side in his next two tournaments, in which he can score a total of 1,500 points.
