Barcelona have confirmed that Wojciech Szczęsny will remain at the club for the time being, after his contract expired last week. With the Blaugrana back in training this week, Hansi Flick has undoubtedly been keen to ensure that the 35-year-old is present at the start of the season.

The veteran goalkeeper came out of retirement less than two months into his new life last season, after Barcelona searched for an experienced goalkeeper in the wake of Marc-André ter Stegen’s serious knee injury in September. Szczęsny spent three months on the bench before winning a starting spot in January and ending the season with victories in the Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey and La Liga.

Barcelona gives Szczęsny two-year contract
Barcelona announced on Monday that Szczęsny has signed a new two-year contract with the club, which will keep him active until 2027 – when he will be 37 years old. Most expect him to have a backup role going forward, after manager Hansi Flick has praised his character and impact on the dressing room throughout the season. He has also become popular among his followers due to his laid-back attitude and sense of humor.

Four first-team goalkeepers in Barcelona’s squad
With the confirmation of Szczęsny’s continuation, Barcelona now have four first-team goalkeepers in their squad for next season as things stand. Szczęsny is expected to act as a backup for Joan García, after Barcelona triggered his purchase clause this summer. The big question is what the future holds for captain Ter Stegen, who Barcelona want to phase out, but the player himself seems determined to stay.

Iñaki Peña on his way out
The fourth is Iñaki Peña, who was a first-team goalkeeper until January. He is expected to leave the club on a free transfer, despite having one year left on his deal. Valencia and Celta Vigo showed interest in Peña, but now it looks like he could end up abroad.
