You understand why Barcelona have financial problems when you see the extreme salaries and expensive deals they manage to make. Frenkie de Jong, who they bought for 86 million euros from Ajax in the summer of 2019, has tried to sell almost every window since then. Reason, a reward beyond all reason.
The Dutch midfielder signed a six-year contract worth just over 100 million euros, this year alone the salary will be around 27 million euros.

Frenkie de Jong has shone with big games and was much wanted for as long as Erik ten Hag reigned at Old Trafford, but despite offers to continue paying his wages, he got on his hind legs. – The 27-year-old has had a tough year behind him with several injuries and now that he is back on the pitch, his performances have not been able to live up to the naturally high expectations.
High pay and poor performance are not a good combination.
Sport reports that Barcelona have now started planning to get rid of de Jong this summer. The midfielder has since had a contract offer from the Catalan giant, with a significantly lower salary, to consider. But he hasn’t responded yet.
If the Dutchman has not accepted the new contract, Barça will again try to get rid of him.
It’s not just about financial reasons. Currently, Barça has it well populated in midfield with players like Casado, Pedro, Dani Olmo, Gavi and Fermin Lopez to name a few. Therefore, Barcelona’s management prefers that de Jong look for another club.
With Rúben Amorim as the new manager, Manchester United are not an option, he has promised to put a lid on player purchases of Dutch players and players who have played for Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
