Barcelona, who are in constant conflict with La Liga, seem to be in a slightly calmer period now. Barcelona have already completed their first summer window purchase in mid-June, with the transfer of Joan Garcia from arch-rivals Espanyol for €25 million. At the same time, the club has publicly expressed full confidence that they have both the funds to pay Nico Williams’ €58 million buyout clause, and the ability to sign him during the summer.
But if it were that simple, the deal would probably already be in place. Barcelona are trying to avoid Williams starting preparations with Athletic Club, and are working to give the Basque winger guarantees that could convince him to give the go-ahead for the transfer.

How much does Barcelona need to register Williams and Garcia?
According to Diario AS, Barcelona currently lack the €30 million salary cap to be able to sign both new players. This amount can be released through:
- Revenue from player sales
- Wage savings
The figures also include the effect of €100 million from the rental of VIP seats, if the accounting firm Crowe approves this transaction in the club’s accounts. Originally, the club was short of €47 million, but part of this is now covered through:
- Resale proceeds from Alex Valle, Jean-Clair Todibo, Ilaix Moriba, Ludovit Reis and Ferran Jutglà
Lack of big player sales
Apart from Ousmane Dembélé’s €50 million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have had few player sales in recent years that have brought in significant revenue.
This summer, it was initially thought that Frenkie de Jong could bring in a significant sum. Since then, both Ronald Araújo and Fermín López have been mentioned as potential targets, but neither player shows signs of wanting to leave the club.
Barcelona still have several players they want to sell, including:
- Pablo Torre
- Iñaki Peña
- Oriol Romeu
- Andreas Christensen
- Pau Victor
But it is unclear how much the club can get for them, or – in Christensen’s case – whether he can be persuaded to leave.
The situation underscores the financial challenges Barcelona are facing, even with big ambitions in the transfer market.
