The immediate reaction from Barcelona is that it will be very difficult, but not impossible, to meet Liverpool’s demand for 80 million euros for Luis Díaz.

According to transfer expert Nicolò Schira, Luis Díaz (28) could leave Liverpool this summer. Sky Sports have previously reported that the Colombian winger is about to negotiate a contract extension with Liverpool, but that there is some distance between demands and offers.

Now, Spanish Relevo reports that Barcelona have made Díaz their high-priority summer transfer and that they will be willing to spend a lot of money. However, it is unclear whether the player himself is interested in a move to Catalonia.

Just as Liverpool has won the Premier League, Barcelona has won La Liga. Both teams’ confidence will make the transition more difficult.

Challenges for Barcelona:

  • Liverpool demand €80 million to release Díaz
  • Barcelona will have to sell more players to afford this sum
  • Díaz’s current contract with Liverpool runs until the summer of 2027

Career Highlights:

  1. Breakthrough in Colombia with Barranquilla (2016-2017)
  2. European debut with Porto (2019), where he scored 14 goals in his first season
  3. Liverpool signing in January 2022 for approx. NOK 450 million
  4. Personal tragedy when mother and father were kidnapped in Colombia (released after negotiations) (November 2022)
  5. Strong comeback 2023/24 with 17 goals and 8 assists in 48 games

Díaz grew up in La Guajira, one of Colombia’s poorest areas. His father, Luis Manuel Díaz, was his biggest supporter and coach growing up. The kidnapping in 2022 shocked the football world, but the father was released after 12 days. (the mother was released almost immediately)

With financial problems, Barcelona must:

  1. Selling players like Raphinha or Ferran Torres
  2. Negotiate down Liverpool’s price
  3. Persuade Díaz himself to make a change
