Barcelona extends Hansi Flick’s contract

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick stated last week that a new deal with the club “was not finalized”, but it seems that progress has been made in recent days. The Blaugrana have now announced an extension that binds the German coach to the Catalan club until 2027.

Flick arrived in the summer of 2023 on a two-year contract that was supposed to last until Joan Laporta’s presidency, but has now been given another year. According to Sport, his technical team – consisting of Marcus Sorg (assistant coach), Toni Tapalovic and Heiko Westermann – has also had their contracts extended to match Flick’s new deal.

Flick prefers shorter commits

Flick has stated several times that he wants to assess the situation year by year rather than commit to long-term projects. It has also been mentioned in the local press that Barcelona is likely to be Flick’s last job, and that he does not plan to be on the sidelines for many more years. The 2026/27 season could be his last as manager, if not the next.

Success in the debut season

Flick has had a strong start at Barcelona.

The rebuilding of the team is among the most impressive in La Liga in a long time – he took a team that seemed shattered and resource-poor and led them to a double victory in the Copa del Rey and La Liga. One of four victories over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup marked his first trophy. The only bitter-sweet part of the season was the loss in the Champions League semi-final against Inter, which was at once an achievement, but also a disappointment to miss out on the final.

Although Flick has received a salary increase for his work, he is unlikely to get more than one or two new players this summer, as he prepares for another attack on the Champions League. With Barcelona’s continued salary cap issues, most of the available funds are likely reserved for one major signing.
