The blue-grey team has set their sights on one of the world’s best attacking players, a player who on a daily basis “stands in the way” of Alexander Sørloth.
At Camp Nou, they are already thinking beyond next summer. While the signing of Nico Williams seems to be the big offensive operation in this transfer window, FC Barcelona’s sporting management has already laid out a medium-term strategy to fill the void that will mark the end of an era: the departure of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker, who has been a goal guarantor since his arrival in 2022, is expected to leave the club when his contract expires in 2026. And on Barcelona’s radar there is already a clear name as a replacement: Julián Álvarez.

The interest in the Argentine international is not new, but has gained renewed strength after his breakthrough at Atlético Madrid. In his first season with the Colchoneros, Álvarez had a brilliant season with almost 30 goals, which aroused interest from several European big clubs. Barcelona, however, see him as a key piece to start a new offensive phase under Hansi Flick’s leadership.
Barcelona want to sign Julián Álvarez in 2026
With Lewandowski close to 37 years old and with no sign of an extension offer, everything points to the 2025/26 season being his last as a Blaugrana. Although his performances are still at the top level, the club wants to prepare for his departure and ensure a gradual transition. The possibility that the Pole could go to Arab football has also accelerated internal work.
At the moment, Atlético have no intention of letting their star striker go, but Barcelona are keeping a close eye on any developments. Atlético Madrid manager prioritizes Julián Álvarez over Alexander Sørloth, who is used as a super reserve despite the fact that the Norwegian striker has more goals last season in La Liga than the Argentine. Joan Laporta sees Álvarez as a strategic window of opportunity, while Deco is considering options so as not to jeopardize his future. There is still time, but Barcelona already know who they want as their next “9”.
