Barcelona are already working on plans to defend their La Liga title next season, with some obvious areas that need improvement. The full-back positions and an attacking player to relieve Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have often been mentioned as the main focus for sporting director Deco, but there is also uncertainty about the goalkeeper position.
According to reports, this is one of the positions Barcelona are least convinced of, with Marc-André ter Stegen far from his best form after his return, and questions about whether Wojciech Szczęsny can deliver at the top level. Still, after offering Szczęsny a contract extension, Cadena SER claims that if he accepts it, the club will not enter the transfer market for a goalkeeper.

Emiliano Martínez on Barcelona’s radar
If Szczęsny rejects the offer, DSports (via MD) claims that Barcelona are likely to go for a new goalkeeper. One possible option could be Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, who appears to be on his way out of the club after a tearful farewell to Villa Park at the weekend.
Manchester United and Saudi Arabia are also interested in the 32-year-old, but he is also on Barcelona’s list if they need a new goalkeeper. His competitive instinct can give ter Stegen a challenge for the place.
Szczęsny’s decision is expected soon
After offering Szczęsny a two-year contract, the Polish veteran admitted that he is not yet sure if he will stay. The club is optimistic, according to Sport, and expects his decision this week. He is aware that ter Stegen will take back his place as first choice next season.
Other goalkeeper options Barcelona are considering
Interestingly, one of the goalkeepers Aston Villa has been most strongly linked with as a replacement for Martínez Espanyol’s is Joan García. The Spanish goalkeeper is also on Barcelona’s three-man shortlist, but it looks like they will wait until next summer to invest in a new goalkeeper.
Now it remains to be seen what Szczęsny decides – and whether Barcelona will have to go in search of a new safety valve.
