When Manchester City’s super-goalkeeper Ederson decided to go for Guardiola, the red carpet was rolled out for one of England’s greatest goalkeeping talents. With strong competition from Newcastle, James Trafford was signed this summer, the Burnley goalkeeper has the potential to take over as England’s national team goalkeeper. The 23-year-old started the season as the first goalkeeper, had some less fortunate interventions, then came the shock in the transfer to September.

The shock was Gianluigi Donnarumma, the world’s best goalkeeper. The Italian was pushed out of PSG, playing for Pep Guardiola and with friend Erling Haaland tempted the most. For James Trafford, the red carpet disappeared and was rolled out for Donnarumma. On the first of September, Gianluigi Donnarumma entered the training ground and Trafford was relegated to the bench. Trafford will get a few games on the line for City, but hardly enough to play themselves relevant for England’s World Cup squad. According to the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old has signalled he wants to leave City, five months after arriving.

At the beginning of December, Football-Insider’s sources reported Wolverhampton are very interested in renting Trafford in January. Jørgen Strand Larsen and the “Olves gang” desperately need reinforcements to stop the scoring slide towards their own goal. The former Burnley goalkeeper has also been linked with Newcastle, Aston Villa and Tottenham, so it is clear that the future England international has great potential.

Football-Insider’s sources report Pep Guardiola and City will block all attempts at exit at young Trafford.

For the disgruntled goalkeeper, however, it is an opening. If City continue in their current form, it could see him get a lot of game time as the season progresses. City are just behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, and are also well placed in the Champions League, as well as still in both domestic cup competitions. They face Brentford in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, and Trafford are expected to start that meeting, having played in the cup’s previous rounds.

But there will be no exit for full playing time, there will be no one at Trafford in January.
