When Nicklas Süle let his Bayern Munich contract expire without accepting an extension in 2022, Borussia Dortmund jumped at the opportunity to hijack the German international. This came at a cost, four years later the club has decided that Süle has done its part.

The 30-year-old’s time at Dortmund has not only been a success story. It has been four years characterized by both sporting success, but also challenges related to form and injuries. The centre-back negotiated his way into the club’s highest-paid player with around €10 million an annual salary, but is clearly not worth it to the club.

This season there have been various injury breaks and only 588 minutes in the “office”, the match arena. Sporting director Lars Ricken confirms both Süle and Salih Özcan with contracts expiring in the summer will not get an extension.

-We have had good conversations with both players all week. In the end, we decided that we would go our separate ways, says Dortmund’s sporting director briefly.
