Today, the transfer that has been talked about for quite some time is confirmed. The 21-year-old midfielder Diego Gomez will swap Inter Miami for Brighton in January.

Diego, 21, started his professional career with Club Libertad Asuncion in Paraguay, making his debut in May 2022 in the Copa Libertadores. In 14 months with Libertad, he played 52 games, scored six goals and contributed four assists.

The midfielder from Paraguay joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023. He made 40 appearances with seven goals and seven assists for the David Beckham-owned club.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler said on Brighton’s pages: “We look forward to working with Diego very soon. He has already made a real impression both at club and international level.

“Like all young players who come to us from abroad, he will need a period of adaptation to the Premier League, but I feel he can make a big contribution and I look forward to working with him.”

Technical director David Weir said: “We are delighted to welcome Diego to the club and we believe he will be a very good addition to our squad.

“He is a dynamic midfielder who can contribute goals and assists, and we believe his physical profile will be important as he adapts to the challenge of the Premier League.
“He has recently finished the MLS season, so we are confident that he will be ready to compete for a spot in the squad when he joins us next month.”

Gomez will swap the American south coast for the English one on January 1 when the transfer window opens.

Brighton do not say how long a contract 21-year-old Diego Gomez has been given, or what it has cost to bring him to England.

Diego Gomez is listed for nine A-caps for Paraguay.
