This time it didn’t go so well for Ronny Deila in MLS. – The Norwegian manager had good results for New York that he definitely couldn’t follow up in Atlanta.

Deila was fired after a very disappointing season in which the club finished 14th in the MLS Eastern Conference and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Atlanta United have hired Gerardo “Tata” Martino as coach after the sacking of Ronny Deila, in the hope that he can recreate the magic of his first term.

The 62-year-old Argentine has signed a two-year contract that lasts until the end of the 2027 season.

Martino was the club’s first coach when it was established in 2017, and the following year he led Atlanta United to the MLS title.

Before coming to Atlanta for the first time, Martino had experience as a coach for Barcelona and as a national team coach for Argentina.

After his first spell in Atlanta, he was the Mexico national team coach and coach of Inter Miami, where he helped the team win the Leagues Cup in 2023 with Lionel Messi before they became MLS regular season champions in 2024.

“We are delighted to welcome Tata back. He is an outstanding coach who created a winning culture and helped us establish our identity in MLS. There is a lot of work to be done to get us back to championships, but now we are looking forward,” club owner Arthur M. Blank said in a statement.
