Even when Manchester United sank to 8th place in the Premier League and last season 15th, Bruno Fernandes stayed in his post, repeating the message he has given since his transfer in 2020: He chose Manchester United to win the biggest titles with the club. Now United are working intensely to get the captain to extend, but in the third transfer window where Fernandes is linked with an exit, the Portuguese makes a demand of the club, an absolute demand. It’s not about money, it’s about the ability and willingness to go to the top.

In an interview with The Telegraph , Fernandes was honest about what the club management has to convince him of.

“Everyone who comes to Manchester United wants to win every single trophy. No one thinks about coming to the club and fighting for one or two trophies in six years. You want to fight for them all. And what I’ve told the club every time I’ve spoken to them is that what I want while I’m here is to compete (be a title contender),” Fernandes begins.

“Because, if I play, I’ll be close to winning. If I’m not competing (playing for a title contender), there’s no way I’m going to come close to anything. So the most important thing the club needs to understand is this: It’s been 2013 since they last won the Premier League. That’s too long for a club like Manchester United. To go that long without winning the Premier League is not normal, says the United captain.

Fernandes’ contract with United expires next year with an option for a one-year extension. This summer, the United management will have to provide the plan and budgets that convince the club’s most important player that Man Utd will get what it takes to become a real title contender beyond the cups. Otherwise, Bruno will change clubs.
