The Bluebirds are preparing for their first League One season since 2003 after a difficult season in the Championship in 2024/25.
The South Welsh side finished bottom of the second division, where Omer Riza failed to keep the club afloat at the top of the EFL. National hero Aaron Ramsey took charge at Cardiff City Stadium in the last few games, but was unable to prevent the team from being relegated.
As a result, the former Premier League club will now face teams like AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield Town in the third division next season.
Cardiff confirm Barry-Murphy’s arrival
Cardiff have confirmed that Barry-Murphy has left his role as assistant coach at Leicester City to secure a move to Wales.
As a result, Cardiff have been required to pay compensation to the 2015/16 Premier League champions in order to secure the 46-year-old coach.
Barry-Murphy was coach at Leicester since the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy in December 2024, when the Foxes still had the opportunity to avoid relegation.
The Irishman previously spent three years as U23 coach at Manchester City, where he worked with talents such as Cole Palmer.
It is understood that Barry-Murphy’s experience with young players was a decisive factor in him getting the manager’s job at Cardiff this summer.
“The right man” – Cardiff owner on the appointment Following
the appointment of Barry-Murphy, Cardiff owner Vincent Tan stated:
“Throughout the interview process, Brian showed a huge passion for our club because he believes in what we are trying to achieve.”
“He knows this level from both a player and a coaching perspective, where he was noticed for his style of play. Since then, he has only gotten better as a leader.”
“He has a proven track record of youth development having coached some of the most promising youth players in the UK, many of whom are now playing at the highest level.”
“He brings enthusiasm, energy and an exciting vision to today’s football, while also wanting to play an attacking style that our supporters will surely enjoy.”
“It is the combination of all of Brian’s good qualities that makes him the right man to lead us into this new chapter.”
Barry-Murphy and Cardiff will know their first opponents in League One when the fixtures are announced on June 26.
