There are mostly two people who were snubbed as Xabi Alonso’s successor. Cesc Fàbregas, who is the manager and co-owner of Serie A club Como and unemployed former Manchester United and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Just when everything pointed to an imminent departure, Cesc Fàbregas’ future took an unexpected turn. Despite contact with Bayer Leverkusen – who were interested in making him Xabi Alonso’s successor – and interest from AC Milan, the Catalan coach has decided to continue as manager of Como 1907.

There is a long way to go before it really swings off Como, this season they land in the middle of the Serie A table.

According to Sky Sport, the Italian club have managed to convince Fàbregas to stay at least one more season. After his last win against Cagliari, he already expressed his loyalty to the club:

“I will always be grateful for Como.”

Rejected several big clubs
Leverkusen got a clear no – Fàbregas is not moving. The Lombard project, in which he is also a shareholder, won over other offers. Both RB Leipzig and Roma had shown interest, but the former Barcelona and Arsenal player has always had the same priority: to continue his development at Como, something he has repeatedly stressed.

His contract runs until June 2028, but the decision to stay wasn’t just based on the contract – it was also emotional and strategic.

Historic season and big ambitions
Como, who were recently promoted to Serie A after over 20 years, not only managed to avoid relegation, but had an exceptionally strong season with six straight wins and 48 points, which secured their place in the top division by a good margin.

Backed by the Hartono brothers, Asian billionaires, the club has invested almost 100 million euros this season – 40 in the summer and 50 in the winter. Signings such as Caqueret (€15 million), Douvikas (€13 million), Assane Diao (€12 million) and 50% of Nico Paz (€6 million) underline the club’s ambitions.

Fàbregas – the project’s absolute leader
Fàbregas’ role goes far beyond being a coach. He has an influence on all sporting decisions, including signings and long-term planning. The club is already working on building a new stadium (scheduled for completion in 2027/28) and a sports city. Everything also indicates that Nico Paz will stay for another season.

Fàbregas will not only be – he will lead the next phase of a very ambitious project with goals that extend far into the future.
