French giants Paris Saint-Germain and world’s best goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma disagree on most aspects of the ongoing negotiations to extend his contract.

Paris Saint-Germain offers from no fewer than three clubs for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italy international – who is one of 30 players shortlisted for the 2025 Ballon d’Or – looks set to close in on a summer departure from the reigning Champions League champions. (they took the French treble)

Donnarumma is now in the final year of his contract with PSG, and there is no extension in sight for the 26-year-old, who should therefore be sold this summer before a potential free transfer in 2026.

PSG have reportedly struck a deal to sign Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as a replacement for Donnarumma, who is inevitably linked with a move to the Premier League after four years in Paris.

Chelsea and Manchester United have long been considered the two favourites for the 26-year-old. Manchester City were also linked with interest, but they have now brought back James Trafford from Burnley.

However, a third club could still threaten Man United and Chelsea’s transfer ambitions, as ESPN reports that both the Red Devils, the Blues and Inter Milan are expected to make attempts at the goalkeeper. Before the transfer to PSG, he played for his stadium mate at San Siro, AC Milan for a number of years.

Inter’s current first-choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer is considered one of the world’s best, but the Swiss veteran turns 37 in December and will also become a free agent after the 2025/26 season.

Sommer’s reserve is 27-year-old Josep Martinez – who joined from Genoa last year – but the Nerazzurri seem to have set Donnarumma as their new first choice and have been in contact with his agent Enzo Raiola.

Man United and Chelsea have also been in contact with the Italian’s representative, and PSG are now preparing for official bids for the former AC Milan player, who left San Siro on a free transfer in 2021 to join Les Parisiens.

Donnarumma has since kept 56 clean sheets in 161 games for the winners of Ligue 1 and Champions League, with six clean sheets on the road to European triumph last year.

Why is PSG leaving Donnarumma

In an ideal world, Donnarumma and PSG would have extended their cooperation, but the parties could not agree on a new deal, partly due to wage demands.

The report adds that Donnarumma wanted a pay rise from his current monthly salary of £736,000, while PSG football advisor Luis Campos has introduced a new salary structure with a lower base salary and potentially high individual and team-related bonuses.

However, the Italian first-choice goalkeeper disagreed with Campos’ new financial plans, while manager Enrique is not as impressed with all aspects of his game. He has noticed Donnarumma’s limitations in ball handling.

The former Barcelona boss apparently feels that Chevalier is superior with the ball at his feet and in distribution – both on long passes and plays from the back – so he has no qualms about swapping Donnarumma for the Frenchman either.
