Todd Boehly, along with American pensioners, had just spent £4.25 billion to buy Chelsea from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Up in all the shopping in the summer of 2022, they forgot about the players they already had and were apparently not fully aware that there are only 11 players from each team present on the pitch at the same time. One of those who just left was Antonio Rüdiger, who was on an expiring contract.

Real Madrid didn’t have to leave money at Stamford Bridge and compensated for some of the savings by giving the now 32-year-old German full-back a little extra in his paycheck.
FootballTransfers reports that Chelsea are exploring the possibility of a surprise return for Antonio Rüdiger.
Chelsea have sent their people to the Spanish capital to see if it is possible to reach a deal. – After a somewhat tortuous time, Antonio Rüdiger’s value is down to 24 million euros, according to Transfermarkt.
Chelsea are reportedly ready to negotiate if the opportunity presents itself – a deal that would reunite the German star with his former club three years after he left on a free transfer in dramatic circumstances.
Although Rüdiger is generally happy at Madrid, there has been growing excitement surrounding the player in recent months. Sources close to the player have revealed that the 32-year-old has become more difficult to deal with, which has led to conflicts in his immediate circle.
A source with insight into the matter stated:
“It has been tense. He has had conflicts with people in his inner circle, which has made discussions on certain issues extremely difficult.”
Most notably, a breakup between Rüdiger and his brother and agent, Sahr Senesie, has been reported just before Christmas. The cause of the altercation is unknown, but it is said to have been so serious that the star threatened to break all ties.

Chelsea unwavering – looking for leadership
Despite personal challenges, Chelsea still see Rüdiger as a valuable player. A club source stated:
“He is a leader, a warrior – exactly what this Chelsea team needs. We are not worried about his personality. That is precisely the enthusiasm we lack.”
There is also reason for optimism. Rüdiger has previously expressed great love for his time in London and said in 2022:
“Chelsea will always be in my heart. London will always be my home.”
Uncertain future in Madrid
Real Madrid has not yet made a final decision, but the situation could develop quickly. Although there has been talk of a contract extension, his sending off in the Copa del Rey final (which resulted in a six-match suspension) could make the club reconsider his role.
Moreover, with Éder Militão returning from injury as well as Madrid’s interest in Arsenal’s William Saliba and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, Rüdiger’s place in the team could be threatened.
A return to Chelsea is far from certain, but with the player open to a new challenge and the club eager for experience in defence, this could be one of the most surprising transfers of the summer.
