Rangers have reached an agreement with Russell Martin that he will be the club’s new manager. The road to get there has been relatively long as we have to go all the way back to February when Philippe Clement was fired. “Barry Ferguson has worked well as interim manager, so there has been no rush to find a solution.
Several have been on the Scottish club’s lists, including Bodø/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen and Real Madrid coach Davide Ancelotti. According to Sky Sports, Martin has now agreed personal terms with Rangers to take over the job. The 39-year-old has been without a coaching job since he was fired from Southampton in December.
Martin’s career
Martin led Southampton back to the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, but was unable to keep the team in the top division. His heavily passing-oriented style of play led to many costly ball losses, which ultimately ruined much of the good work that had gotten them up.
Second chance in Scotland
Martin, who has been eager to get back into the coaching business, now gets a second chance in top-flight football with Rangers. The club will offer him a three-year contract.
The Rangers expect to announce the hiring of Martin “in the next few days”, with the deal now ready to be signed. Prior to his tenure at Southampton, the former Norwich defender had experience as a manager of MK Dons and Swansea City.
During his three coaching spells, during which he has managed 252 games, Martin has recorded 99 wins, 60 draws and 93 losses. The 39-year-old also had a brief loan spell of 15 games for Rangers in 2018, as well as 29 caps for Scotland.
