After three years and 107 games for Manchester United, Christian Eriksen stepped out as a free agent last summer. By then, his agent had been working in high gear since the new year to find the club and the league perfect for his client. Eriksen wanted to go to the World Cup with Denmark, where Saudi Arabian money bins or MLS were out of the question anyway. In the end, the choice fell on Germany’s 11th best club. This choice has given Eriksen a national team ticket, but has turned out to take a turn no one predicted – just south towards relegation.
When Eriksen signed for Wolfsburg before the season, the thought of potential relegation certainly did not cross the mind. With seven points left in the league season, Eriksen and Wolfsburg are sensationally below the relegation line!

Wolfsburg have long “flirted” with relegation, but now it has really gotten serious. After the previous round’s loss to Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg have three points up on 16th place, which gives them access to the playoffs against a team from the 2. Bundesliga, and five points up to a safe save. Eriksen has done his thing, playing in 24 out of 25 league games and noting 2 goals and 8 assists, but helping little.
Kicker has taken a closer look at what relegation will mean, and according to the German newspaper, all player contracts are also valid in the 2. Bundesliga, but the players’ salaries will be reduced by 35 percent. Last season, Wolfsburg finished 11th in the Bundesliga, nine points behind 6th place and the Conference League ticket. Christian Eriksen probably did not envisage a salary cut of 35 percent and play against Bayern II, Andernach and Viktoria.
