Spurs have already completed their first signing in the January transfer window after signing Conor Gallagher in a £35 million deal from Atlético Madrid.

However, the north London club are ready to back Thomas Frank further before the February 2 deadline, with Brazilian left-back Souza mentioned as a main target for many weeks.

A deal has been struck between the two clubs, and Teixeira has given a big hint that the transfer will be completed following his latest comments on the Brazilian club’s finances.

Teixeira explains how Santos will use the money from Souza
Tottenham and Santos have agreed a deal worth around £13 million for the 19-year-old, who looks set to be confirmed as the Premier League club’s newest signing. According to Teixeira, the money from Spurs for Souza will be used to balance the accounts, pay off debts and try to avoid further sanctions from FIFA.

The most important of these concerns João Basso, with Portuguese club Arouca filing a lawsuit with FIFA over a €2.6 million non-payment.

He said, via ESPN Brasil:
“The efforts are always the same to balance the debt. We have already paid R$ 130 million in transfer bans in 2024, and others were avoided through agreements. Arouca would not even consent to talk to Santos, who even sent a representative to Portugal,” he reported.

“It is important to remember that this [João Basso] debt, like all the others processed at FIFA, is not from our administration, but from previous administrations.”

Micky van de Ven and the links to Real Madrid become real

Tottenham actually agreed a deal to sign Souza before negotiations with Atlético for Gallagher started, so why has it taken longer to materialise?

The first reason is that once an agreement is reached between the two clubs, a medical test must be organized for a player traveling from Brazil.

As confirmed by Alasdair Gold on Friday, Souza has completed his medical test, but now it is taking time to get the green light for various papers related to the signing of a player from South America.
