A few days ago, there were strong signals that manager Ruben Amorim had got the guys on the money bag to extend with first goalkeeper Andre Onana. – I am therefore a little confused by today’s news that he has signed a possible replacement.
Football Transfers writes that Manchester United have made contact about Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, but the Italian is not going to be cheap.

Carnesecchi on United’s radar
Corriere dello Sra reported at the weekend that United have taken the initiative to sign Atalanta’s first goalkeeper, who had an outstanding season in Serie A last year.
But Carnesecchi is not going to be a cheap affair. According to TuttoAtalanta, Atalanta have informed United that they value the goalkeeper at €45-50 million.
Atalanta have no intention of selling Carnesecchi this summer unless they receive an irresistible offer in this price range.
Carnesecchi as an Onana substitute?
Carnesecchi was one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A last year, when Atalanta finished third.
After Roma’s Mile Svilar, the Italian was arguably the most consistent goalkeeper in the league.
With his impressive saves, big physique and good personality, Carnesecchi has impressed United’s scouts, who are looking for a replacement for André Onana.
Onana’s disappointing performances
United bought the Cameroonian goalkeeper for around €55 million from Inter in 2023, but he has been a big disappointment.
High expectations were placed on Onana, who had a brilliant Champions League season with Inter in 2022/23 and played a key role in their place in the final.
He kept the most clean sheets in the tournament, including five in the play-offs, as Inter lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the final. He was also considered the world’s best goalkeeper with the ball in his feet.
But Onana had a flawed first season in the Premier League, where United had their worst defence in decades and conceded the most goals in decades.
He made a number of mistakes, especially in the Champions League group stage against Galatasaray, Copenhagen and Bayern Munich.
This season, Onana improved slightly at the start, but he fell back to last year’s level in the second half of the season, when United finished without a trophy and in 15th place – the club’s worst finish in decades.
