Manchester United are building for the long run. England internationals are high on the wish list, according to an English newspaper, one of the 2024/25 season’s best attacking players in the Premier League could end up at Old Trafford.
Cole Palmer was the Manchester City boy who did not accept Pep Guardiola’s plan for playing time. The attacking midfielder thought he was ready now, pushed for an exit and signed with Chelsea in the autumn of 2023. In his debut season, Palmer surprised the whole ball island. With 34 Premier League appearances, 22 goals and 11 assists, Palmer slammed down the door to stardom in the Premier League. PFA Young Player of the Year, England Men’s Player of the Year, FSA Men’s Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Month (April and September 2024), Young Player of the Season and Castrol Game Changer, were awards that confirmed the player’s status in England.

Last season, “only” 15 Premier League goals came from Palmer, this season Palmer has struggled with injury, but shows in games that as a 23-year-old he still has the course pointed to superstardom. This week, the Daily Express brings an interesting angle. The English ink believes former Manchester United supporter Palmer and the Red Devils are made for each other, where paths are likely to meet.
Here is the analysis:
“You know those players who are a perfect fit for one team? Yes, well, Cole Palmer is exactly that player for Manchester United. It helps that the Manchester-born ace was a United supporter in his childhood, but even beyond his childhood loyalty, Palmer screamsout as an “Old Trafford supporter favourite”. Chelsea took their chance back in 2023 when Palmer struggled to get into Manchester City’s first team, and for the most part, it has been a resounding success. But Chelsea is an unstable club at best, and if they can’t match Palmer’s ambitions, who can say he doesn’t look elsewhere? That’s because, according to some reports, Palmer hasn’t settled properly into life in the south and may be looking to move closer to his home in Manchester.”
“The salary should not be an issue for United, even if the inconsistencies on the pitch continue. But there is also a very real possibility that United could compete in the Champions League next season, while Chelsea could still finish outside the top four (or five, depending on how the coefficient plays out) positions in the league. And if Palmer feels homesick, as certain reports have suggested, it narrows down the list of potential suitors to basically just United anyway. It’s hard to imagine a world where Palmer appears at Anfield as Mohamed Salah’s replacement, and even though he came through the City academy, it feels like this ship sailed a while ago.”
“Sure, it would take a hefty transfer fee, most likely over £100 million, to secure his signature. Not to mention a massive salary and a promise that he will start all the big games. Palmer could be just the kind of posterboy United’s hierarchy needs to really get the INEOS era going. When Ratcliffe arrived at Old Trafford, he made a promise to United fans that the best British talents would flock to join their team. There are few bigger or better in the world of football right now than Palmer. It just makes perfect sense.”
