This summer, Erik ten Hag brought in René Hake as an assistant coach. The run-in period was over, the new United boss had given Ten Hag confidence and a new contract that was supposed to provide peace of mind. Four months later, the United adventure was over for Hake when Ten Hag was put on the Premier League club’s private jet and sent out of town. Now the assistant coach tells his side of the story to Voetbal International, where he believes the Champions League ticket would have been secured with Ten Hag at the helm.
“I was able to fill four editions of the Voetbal International Christmas special in my four months at United, but the fact was also that we didn’t win enough,” the former Ten Hag assistant begins.
However, he believes that they could have reversed the trend if they had been given more time.
–. I honestly think we would have succeeded if we had had more time. It was never the goal to become a champion. The goal was to be part of the Champions League. I think it was possible,” Hake continues.
The Dutchman also has a thing or two to say about the criticism Ten Hag received for signing former Ajax players.
“I would like to say something about that. It was often said or written that it was Erik who spent the money and brought in all those players, but that is nonsense. Manchester United has a scouting department that consists of 40 people or something like that. Erik was not the only one responsible for bringing in new players, says Hake.
