Napoli could be forced into an unthinkable decision involving Scott McTominay after reports of potential transfer problems have surfaced.

McTominay signed for Napoli from Manchester United in a transfer worth £25.7 million in 2024, and he had an incredible debut season, scoring 13 goals across all competitions from midfield and firing Antonio Conte’s men to a fourth Serie A title.

His excellent form was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player award and a nomination for the Ballon d’Or.

This season, McTominay has found the back of the net on five occasions for Napoli, who are two points behind the top and recently lifted the Supercoppa Italiana thanks to a 2-0 win over Bologna in the final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

But days later, IlBianconero, has reported that there are some financial concerns for Napoli.

While Lazio is set to be lifted from a transfer embargo by the Independent Commission, both Naples and Pisa could be in trouble as it is understood that they have fallen on the wrong side of “extended labour cost to income” regulations.

Napoli are believed to have fallen below the 0.8 threshold, and failure to fulfil could cause difficulties in the transfer market as the club will have to effectively balance their accounts by selling players to make new signings and be at an equal level.

Given the level to which his share price has risen, McTominay, one of the club’s top assets, will look to be a leading candidate to be sold for a significant sum if Napoli do indeed get into financial restrictions as it looks now.

McTominay a present value of €45 million and would no doubt see Napoli make a significant profit from the 29-year-old player.

However, the situation could get worse for Napoli in the near future, because when the summer comes around, the threshold will be set at 0.7, and failure to comply could result in the worst-case scenario in the form of a transfer ban.

Currently in third place in the league, Napoli resume the match on December 28 when they travel to Cremonese before another away game against Lazio in Rome in their first game of 2026 on January 4.
