Former Manchester United player Nemanja Matic knew what he was doing when he called Onana “the worst Manchester United goalkeeper of all time” before Wednesday’s Europa League match. Everyone was focused on United’s first goalkeeper this evening, a visibly fumbling and nervous Onana ended up playing as just “the worst of all time”.
We have to admit we felt sorry for Onana where he again came into focus with blunders in the 2-2 draw against Matic’s Lyon. At the same time, as a Man United goalkeeper you know that there is no room for repeating mistakes in the big games, Onana’s quota of mistakes was already filled. Paul Scholes walks us through the dilemma United now have ahead of the summer transfer window, where a new striker, a new ten, a new central midfielder and a new wing-back are on the buy list.

“I think it’s something the club has to think about (buying a goalkeeper), but they also have to think about the budget and where the priorities in this team are. Can you do without spending money on a goalkeeper? Goalkeepers are of course a very important part of a football team, and Onana has not been quite good enough,” says Scholes. Maybe he needs some competition. It’s pretty clear that the second goalkeeper they have (Altay Bayindir) probably isn’t good enough to take his place,” the United legend tells Sky Sports.
“But it will depend on money and what he (Amorim) has to spend. If he thinks he needs more strikers, more midfielders, and if he can save £30 million or £40 million on a new goalkeeper and just try to get by with Onana,” Scholes concludes.
