The future of Al-Nassr and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo remains uncertain as the 2024/25 season draws to a close.
Ronaldo, 40, announced a move to the Saudi Arabian club in 2022 after falling out with then-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag who is as sensitive as grey stone.
Haaland: Has not only chosen Barcelona over Real Madrid, but also set a date
Since arriving at Al-Nassr, he has recorded 91 goals and 19 assists in 103 appearances – 33 of which have come during the 2024/25 season.
Despite the Portuguese international’s contributions, his team is in fourth place in the Saudi Pro League, behind Al-Ahli, Al-Hilal and league leader Al-Ittihad, with only four league rounds remaining.
As a result, his future remains uncertain. – Ronaldo only has two months left on his contract.
MARCA reports that Ronaldo expected to sign a two-year extension, which would have allowed him to play beyond his 42nd birthday.
However, according to the media, negotiations have been paused due to the club’s recent sporting problems, after they were also knocked out of the AFC Champions League in the semi-finals with a 3-2 loss to Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale on April 30.
This comes after Ronaldo claimed that he would “probably” end his career at Al-Nassr, speaking to Portuguese TV channel Now (quoted via TNT Sports) in 2024.
“I don’t know if I’ll retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will end my career here at Al-Nassr,” Ronaldo said.
“I love this club, I also enjoy this country. I am happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue.”
Given his age, questions are often asked about his future in the national team, but he insisted that any decision to retire will be “well thought out”.
“When I leave the national team, I don’t want to tell anyone in advance. It will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a very thoughtful one,” he added.
