The Daily Mirror has taken a break from Christmas celebrations to bring the latest in what is headlined “Problematic Liverpool contract update”

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will not cause Liverpool to “take off completely” when it comes to potential wage increases for the trio in negotiations over new contracts.

All three contracts expire in the summer, meaning they have the right to speak to clubs abroad about pre-contract deals from January, and the Reds’ stance on increasing their wages in new deals has now been revealed.

Liverpool are reportedly willing to increase Salah’s weekly wage from £350,000 to no more than £400,000 and the Egyptian expects an increase.

Van Dijk is also said to want a £220,000-per-week pay increase, but that the Merseyside club are reluctant to “go the extra mile”.

Still, it is Alexander-Arnold whose wage situation could be the most “problematic” for Liverpool, they are said to be willing to increase their wages per week from £170,000 to £250,000.

However, the concern is that the right-back has apparently been told by his advisers that he could get a £100,000 per week increase by moving elsewhere, amid talk of a possible move to Real Madrid.

It has taken time, because Liverpool should be keen to find the right balance, read not pay more than they have to.

On the one hand, we are talking without a doubt the three most important players in the Liverpool squad right now, and for a few years.

In conclusion, the newspaper writes that Liverpool are going for an extension with all three, but that it is not at any price. The bosses at Anfield should be confident of success.
