Dan Ashworth could join one of Manchester United’s main Premier League rivals after his shocking Old Trafford exit.

Ashworth, who was headhunted by INEOS, stepped down as sporting director at Manchester United on Sunday in the wake of the club’s devastating 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

He lasted only five months in the role, after holding rough talks with CEO Omar Berrada, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe pressing on in the background.

Dan Ashworth, who had the same job at Newcastle before being bought off this summer, will not be unemployed for long. On the contrary, it can happen very quickly! The Athletic has several sources talking about Arsenal’s search for a new sporting director following Edu’s departure last month.

And again there are contacts, Arsenal’s CEO Richard Garlick worked with Ashworth in their West Brom days.

Arsenal have a vacancy for sporting director following Edu’s shock departure.

The Brazilian, who played for the club as a player, returned to the Gunners as technical director before being promoted to sporting director. He was heavily involved in appointing Mikel Arteta, with Arsenal winning the FA Cup at the end of his first season in charge.

Edu has been widely credited with helping to transform Arsenal back into true title contenders, having gone toe-to-toe with Manchester City over the years.

They have finished the previous two seasons in second place behind champions Manchester City.

During Edu’s tenure, Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel and Declan Rice have all arrived and become key players.
