Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has completed his postponed transfer to MLS club Inter Miami and a couple of days ago scored the first goal for his new club.

David Beckham has explained why he went for the Argentine international, which became obvious when he scored the first goal in the Leagues Cup 3 – 1 win against Club Universidad Nacional.

Transition Details

De Paul has been in talks with the American club since Atletico Madrid’s exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, and the final details came into place a little while ago.

  • The experienced midfielder (31) reunites with former national teammate Javier Mascherano and current captain Lionel Messi in Florida.
  • He signed a loan deal until the end of 2025 (MLS regular season), with an option to permanently transfer from 2026 to 2029.

De Paul’s excitement

De Paul expressed joy at starting this new chapter in his career:

  • “What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, win titles and write history for the club,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
  • “This is a club that is on its way to becoming big, with a long history ahead of it, so many will follow this incredible team.”

Beckham’s role

Inter Miami owner David Beckham emphasized why De Paul was an important bargain:

  • “He brings experience, passion and quality to the team. Rodrigo is a player I have admired for many years.”
  • “As a leader, he has contributed significantly to the teams he has played for, especially the Argentine national team.”

Consequences for Atletico

De Paul’s departure gives Diego Simeone the opportunity to reshape his midfield after a summer of investment:

  • Alex Baena, Thiago Almada and Johnny Cardoso have already arrived at the Metropolitano.
  • All three are expected to be starters in the 2025/26 season.

VM as motivation

De Paul also looks towards the 2025 World Cup (for which Argentina have already qualified) as a driving force for the transfer.
