Pereira is a household name at Sporting, the former defender has been part of the coaching staff since retiring as a player in 2021. Last season, Pereira had Amorim as his coach.

Sporting supporters paid tribute to their great coach when he said goodbye in the last game before leaving Manchester in November. There was great gratitude to Ruben Amorim who had led Sporting back to the top. Some games without Amorim on the sidelines, the atmosphere in the stands has tipped in the opposite direction.
Joao Pereira was given the thankless task of stepping in as head coach at short notice in a season that had so far been a continuous journey of success. Now the Portuguese club has lost three games in a row, for the first time in five years!
Amorim was brought to Sporting in 2020, before the coach packed up and traveled to Manchester, he had led Sporting to eight games without defeat. Pereira started well with a 6-0 win over Amrante in the first leg, then everything went straight south.

According to O Jogo, supporters in the stands on Thursday with their waving scarves demanded that Sporting fire Pereira. They want their Amorim back.
