Newcastle United’s mixed season so far has led to speculation over the future of manager Eddie Howe at St James’ Park after the summer.
The Magpies are 12th in the Premier League table and will once again go without trophies after a crushing 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were humiliated 7-2 at Camp Nou in the second leg.

Howe’s long-term future on Tyneside has been questioned following statements from David Hopkinson, where he refused to publicly support the manager, which may have opened the door for the club to make a move to replace him.
Newcastle can make Howe-U-turn
Several websites say that Howe has received assurances that he is safe as manager of Newcastle, with the intention of giving him the freedom to rebuild the squad this summer. – The owners Mohammed bin Salman and The Public Investment Fund have given Eddie Howe, who was actually seen as an emergency solution (in 2021) until a bigger star could be hired, have been told that he has two years to build a Newcastle that can win the Champions League.
But there is a reasonable argument that the 48-year-old has taken the club as far as he can, and a change would make sense for all parties. Does Howe deserve the chance to rebuild? Absolutely. But life – and football – isn’t always fair, and sometimes timing can be your biggest enemy.
In this case, that may be the case. The World Cup this summer will see more top managers become available and move around, especially with top jobs such as Manchester United and Real Madrid expected to be vacant, while teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool and several others could also experience changes.
It could give Newcastle a chance to make a switch for someone who may seem unattainable right now – which could be just what the club and squad need to move up to the next level.
United States boss Mauricio Pochettino, who has already admitted that he is more than open to a return to the Premier League for his next job, is someone who could take Newcastle far.
The Argentine’s contract with the United States expires after this summer’s World Cup, and he will be available to choose his next club. Reports had suggested that he was likely to return to Tottenham, but they have since brought in Roberto De Zerbi on a long-term contract.
His style of play, experience in the league, and the fact that he has done it before with Tottenham, suggests that he can take this team to a new level – something Howe has not shown he can do. And it may be a matter of now or never for the board to make its decision.
One thing is for sure, Mauricio Pochettino does not wait two years for a job to become available.
