Before last season, the world’s best club signed Kylian Mbappé. Few thought that Toni Kroos’ exit to retirement would halt Real Madrid’s title snag, with Mbappé in attack, the La Liga giants would increase the gap to their rivals anyway. It ended with a completely titleless season, with Mbappé creating an imbalance in Ancelotti’s well-oiled attacking machine, while Kroos left a crater that was not filled. Now there is more unrest in Madrid.

Xabi Alonso had just started as the new Real Madrid coach, before he told the microphones that the attacking stars could choose to contribute defensively as well – or stay on the bench. All last season, criticism came at Vinicius Jr. and Mbappé, who were accused of having more focus on winning the Ballon d’Or, than giving it their all as a team player. When there is a halt in negotiations between Vinicius Jr. and the Real management, we are again reminded that a club can have too many superegos at a time, even if they are world-class.

Earlier this summer, the Brazilian was heavily linked to Saudi Arabian money bins and desert football, but it ended with Real and Vinicius negotiating a contract extension, with the 25-year-old staying at the club until 2030.

The reason is said to be that Vinicius Jr.’s salary demand is that it must be higher than Mbappé’s of €30 million, including bonus for extension. This will make the Brazilian the highest-paid Los Blancos player.

According to the Spanish media, the Real Madrid management has refused to comply with his demands, and it is expected that they will postpone negotiations, while keeping the door open for a transfer this summer if suitable bids are put on the table for Vinicius.

We said it before, and we’ll say it again: Bringing Kylian Mbappé directly to the top of the salary hierarchy at the world’s best club, it doesn’t come without problems. Now we are there.
