Real Madrid have entered the race for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, amid his difficulties at the north London club.

It is said that the winner of 15 Champions League titles is closely following Romero ahead of the summer transfer window, as they want to bring in a new centre-back to the squad.

Romero has recently shown signs of frustration at Tottenham, when he went out on social media and criticised the club’s transfer activity during the winter window, and now he will have to deal with yet another new manager after Thomas Frank was sacked on Wednesday after another defeat, this time against Newcastle.

The Argentine also lost his temper in Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United last weekend, when he was sent off for a cruel tackle on Casemiro, resulting in a four-match suspension.

Real Madrid interested in Cristian Romero

According to TyC Sports, Real are keeping a close eye on Romero amid his difficult season under head coach Thomas Frank, as the Argentine defender is considering leaving the club at the end of the season.

The “disgruntled” 27-year-old was linked to a Spurs exit during the summer transfer window, but committed to the club by signing a new four-year contract that runs until 2029.

The “world-class” Romero was appointed Tottenham captain by Frank before the season and has been a key player for the Dane ever since, making 28 appearances across all competitions and six goals.

Spurs’ form has been very disappointing in recent weeks, as the Lilywhites have failed to win their last eight Premier League games, including a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday.

The result saw Tottenham drop to 16th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone with 12 games left to play.

Radu Dragusin stepped in for Romero on Tuesday and looks set to retain his role in the North London derby against Arsenal on Sunday.

Paul Scholes wants Manchester United to sign Romero

Romero’s future at Spurs has been a hot topic in recent weeks, and Paul Scholes has stated that he would “like” to see the Argentine don the Manchester United shirt next season.

The former footballer, now a pundit, revealed that he is a big admirer of the 27-year-old centre-back and believes “he doesn’t want to be” at Spurs, amid the recent off-pitch controversies that surround him.

A move to Old Trafford would make Romero the first player to move permanently from Tottenham to United since Dimitar Berbatov’s transfer in 2008.

The two Premier League clubs have also completed transfer deals in recent years, with United signing left-back Sergio Reguilon from Spurs on loan in 2023.
