The plan was for Domenico Tedesco to lead the Belgians to the 2026 World Cup, but an incredible case, which the national team boss describes as “a beautiful story” and lack of results, means that he and his team have been sacked after barely a year.
Domenico Tedesco, who became national team manager for the Belgian men’s national team on 8 February. The chaos reached its peak when Real Madrid goalkeeper and folk hero in Belgium Thibaut Courtois chose to quit because of Tedesco.
“I was proud to be the manager of the Red Devils and together we achieved success! Unfortunately, a beautiful story has come to an end”
Thibaut Courtois has been sacked along with assistants Andreas Hinkel, Max Urwantschky, Vladimir Cepzanovic, Umberto Tedesco and Luke Benstead.
“Domenico had a brilliant start as national team captain and showed that it is possible to achieve success even after the previous generation. He has integrated several young players into the team and his successor can build on that. “We would like to thank him and his staff for their cooperation, hard work and dedication and we wish them all the best in the future,” Peter Williams, CEO of the Belgian Football Federation told his own pages.
Tedesco himself:
Belgium plays the Nations League play-offs against Ukraine in March and a place in the A division is on the line. Belgium finished second-to-last in their group in the Nations League’s A division, which also included Israel, Italy and France.
A candidate to succeed Tedesco is said to be the legend Thierry Henry, who has a past as an assistant coach in Belgium. Henry is currently without a coaching job. – He resigned voluntarily after leading France through this summer’s Olympics, a job he did at the same time as he was manager of France’s U21 national team.
