When yet another Man Utd player is weighed too lightly and leaves the club, the standard response comes from United legends such as Neville, Scholes and Ferdinand: “Not many people can handle the weight of wearing the Man Utd shirt”. Ruben Amorim highlights a player who stands with 32 games and has a bright future ahead of him, but is really struggling with his “weight”.

Patrick Dorgu became Ruben Amorim’s first signing at Manchester United at the start of 2025, the 21-year-old has so far made 32 appearances for the Red Devils, with two assists. The Dane is a player who is perfectly suited to Amorim football, but the United manager does not hold back that the young Dane struggles to “wear the shirt”.

Ruben Amorim feels that Patrick Dorgu is characterized by nerves, and that you can feel it every time the Dane touches the ball. However, the Manchester United coach knows that Dorgu can do much more.

“When I watch him train, he’s so much better than in a game. When I saw Patrick play for the national team, he scored a fantastic goal against Scotland. The decision he made under pressure was completely different from the decisions he makes on our team. You can feel the nervousness every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel that nervousness,” Amorim says according to The Guardian.

Is there any hope?

“I just have to understand the context of trying to help them (Dorgu and Dalot). They are far from their best, and they know it. Like many players on our team and myself. I just look at them and think that they have so much more to give, so let’s see if we can improve this week,” says Amorim.

We love Amorim’s honesty and no bullshit statements, but this is probably serving the opponents Dorgu “on a silver platter” on match day. Here’s a player who can’t stand the pressure, guys.

This could go one of two ways: Either it triggers Dorgu to put aside his performance anxiety in the Man Utd shirt, or the Dane could quickly become the next player to be dumped on the transfer market. At Manchester United, you don’t last long if “the shirt feels too heavy”.
