Thomas Tuchel has led England to the World Cup finals in his first test as England manager. The German has had quite a coaching career with ups and downs. Fired at PSG, four months after he led the club to the Champions League final. Fired from Chelsea, even with the totally surprising Champions League title. Dumped at Bayern Munich after losing the Bundesliga title to coach Xabi Alonso. Three clubs that hardly think much about the fact that they got rid of Tuchel. The situation in Dortmund is completely different.
Hans-Joachim Watzke has looked back on the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel as Borussia Dortmund coach. Just days after winning the DFB Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2017, Thomas Tuchel was dismissed as the club’s head coach. The bomb attack on Dortmund’s team bus before the Champions League match against AS Monaco in April of the same year played a major role in Tuchel’s dismissal. The decision to allow the team to play the postponed match just one day later became a key point of conflict between him and BVB chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke.

In an interview with Sport Bild, Watzke admitted that it was a mistake to remove Tuchel.
-Looking back, I don’t think it would have come to this without the attack. And in retrospect, I have to say: today I probably wouldn’t sack Thomas Tuchel. But at that time, because of this situation, we had torn ourselves apart to such an extent that, on a human level, it probably wouldn’t have worked anymore,” Watzke begins to Sport Bild.
“What is important to me is that what was reported publicly did not reflect our internal discussions. Each player was completely free not to play the next day without any consequences. We met right after the season to talk and clarify how things should continue. But honestly, no one tried to find common ground. There was no real dialogue. After 20 minutes, it was clear: it couldn’t continue,” Watzke says.

-Today I get along well with Thomas again. We’ve talked about it. And I have to say: he is an outstanding coach.
