NRK and TV2 also have a habit of bringing in unemployed coaches to be expert commentators after they have been fired for not being good enough.
Eirik Horneland has not accepted a new coaching job since he was fired at Saint-Étienne. This summer, however, he will be part of NRK’s expert team during the football World Cup.

He tells VG.
“I wanted a little break from coaching. NRK was out early and asked if I would like to work with the World Championships. I thought that sounded exciting, and gradually the thought matured. Now I’m really looking forward to it,” says Horneland.
The Haugesunderen lost his job at the French club at the end of January. He took over Saint-Étienne in 2025, but was unable to save the team from relegation. He went down to level two, but had to leave after weak results in the first half of the season.
Shortly afterwards, several British media reported that Horneland was the favorite for the coaching job in Scottish Aberdeen. Recently, however, it became clear that the club chose another. Horneland emphasizes that he could have gotten a job if he had wanted to, but that he himself chose to take a break.
“I’ve become a grandfather to a little boy who I didn’t get to spend much time with in the beginning, so it’s been nice to spend more time with him. I’ve watched a lot of football, had a few meetings and followed up a few different things. But it has been good to take care of myself,” says Horneland.

Horneland will also join NRK during the pre-season matches against the Netherlands and Switzerland later in March.
