Manchester United fans can breathe a sigh of relief. – The top candidate Thomas Tuchel has now been crossed off the list. Thomas Tuchel will continue as England manager after the 2026 World Cup, leading the team towards the European Championship on home soil in 2028.
England have taken steps to ensure stability on the coaching side. After Gareth Southgate resigned in 2024 – after the European Championship loss to Spain – a long recruitment process ended with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel getting the job.

Tuchel told the BBC that it was “no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far” and that he was “very happy and proud” to continue in the role.
In a statement announcing his new contract, Tuchel said he had received so much support from the FA and fans “that I didn’t hesitate when I was asked to continue in this dream job.”
“Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament, and as a coach, there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest stage possible,” he added.
He signed an 18-month contract that would last until the end of the World Cup this year. Now the federation has extended the agreement.
Unbeaten in the qualifiers
Tuchel has got off to a flying start as England manager. He has lost just one of his first ten games, and went through the World Cup qualifiers unbeaten with eight straight wins, a 22-0 goal difference and zero back-to-backs.
With such a start, the choice was easy for the English Football Association.
The extension was announced ahead of the 2026/27 Nations League draw. According to the federation, they wanted to remove any uncertainty about Tuchel’s future before the World Cup – partly due to the ongoing managerial situation at Manchester United.
United speculation averted
The Reds have hired Michael Carrick on an interim basis until the end of the season, and Tuchel has been among the hottest candidates to take over permanently. The rumours of a move to Old Trafford could easily become a distraction for both Tuchel and the squad.
With the extension in place, England are sending a clear signal: Tuchel is the man they are betting on for several years to come.
Euro 2028 on home soil
The 2028 European Championship will be held in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with semi-finals and a final at Wembley.
With an almost flawless run of results so far, there is little to fault Tuchel’s performance. Now he has the opportunity to complete the project – all the way up to the European Championships on home soil.
