Erik ten Hag has released an explosive statement after being sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after only two Bundesliga games as coach.
Ten Hag was appointed as Leverkusen boss at the beginning of the summer following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid.
The 2023/24 reigning Bundesliga champions drew one and lost one of their first two league games under Ten Hag.
They squandered a 3-1 lead against ten-man Werder Bremen on Saturday, with captain Robert Andrich publicly criticising his teammates and other members of the club in his post-match interview.
Reports surfaced on Sunday that Leverkusen were already considering Ten Hag’s future, and they announced on Monday morning that the decision had been made to strip him of his position.
Former Manchester United manager Ten Hag has already released a statement on the matter through his agents SEG Football – and it is clear to see what he thinks of Leverkusen’s decision.
“The decision by Bayer Leverkusen’s management this morning to put me on leave came as a complete surprise,” the statement begins. “To part ways with a coach after only two league games is unprecedented.”
“This summer, many key players who were part of previous successes left the squads. Building a new, close-knit team is a careful process that requires both time and trust. A new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set the standards, shape the squad and make his mark on the style of play.”
“I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately the management was not willing to give me the time and trust I needed, which I deeply regret. I feel like this was never a relationship based on mutual trust.”
Ten Hag continues: “Throughout my career, every season I have been able to lead to the end as a coach has brought success. Clubs that have put their trust in me have been rewarded with success and silver.”
“Finally, I would like to thank Bayer Leverkusen’s supporters for their warmth and passion, and I wish the squad and staff the best of luck for the rest of the season.”
