Everything is not as before for the sky blues this season. Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid a month ago and they are down in 5th place in the Premier League. – That alone has led to rumors that both manager Pep Guardiola and Norwegian goal machine Erling Braut Haaland are looking towards the exit door at the Etihad Stadium.
But there is nothing definitive in that information. – What is definitive, however, is what happens in the ongoing investigation and trial, which is about 130 possible violations of financial rules.
The answer will come in a few weeks!
Sky Sports and The Athletic report that Erling Braut Haaland will leave Manchester City this summer if they are severely punished in the club’s lawsuit for alleged breaches of financial rules.
An independent hearing has officially ended after a four-year investigation conducted by UEFA. Manchester City have denied any wrongdoing, but the club has been accused of failing to provide accurate financial information from 2009 to 2018, and failing to cooperate from 2018 to 2023.
If City are found guilty, there is a high chance that they will not only receive a heavy points penalty, but that they could even be relegated from the Premier League.
Reports in Spain go even further, El Nacional even reported earlier this week that Haaland would leave even if City are “only” out of next season’s Champions League.
Haaland has just signed a new contract with City until 2034, but his future at the club is still in doubt.
Haaland has for some time been heavily linked with a move to La Liga at the end of the season – either to Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Haaland never intended to stay at Manchester City for the long term when he joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. – It is success, together with playing for Pep Guardiola, that makes him stay and thrive. The contract extension for the Norwegian goalkeeper came only after Pep Guardiola himself extended his contract.
This is now his third season, and he can also feel like he has achieved everything he wants by the end of the current campaign.
Barcelona and Real Madrid, both wanted to sign him when he left Borussia Dortmund for Man City in 2022.
Haaland scored an incredible 90 goals in 98 games in his first two seasons at Man City, winning every major trophy in the club game, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League.
He is also enjoying another high-scoring season this season despite City’s difficult run of 29 goals in 39 appearances.
