Erling Haaland gave his loyalty to Manchester City until 2034, Manchester City will reward the Norwegian for this with what is supposed to be £500,000 in weekly wages. At the same time, the enforcement of the rules for profitable and sustainable club operations is tightened. Here and now, the salary can be defended in a way when City are about to close the door to Real Madrid, but there is a potential “financial bomb” for City.
Football finance expert Rob Wilson, a professor at Sheffield Hallam University, points out that it is a very high risk to offer a player a contract extension of this duration and conditions.
“There is an incredible amount of risk associated with giving players contracts that exceed four or five years. What happens if Erling Haaland breaks his leg in three or four years and his career is over? He can just sit and try to do the rehabilitation, get paid, and that causes big problems for the club around the PSR compliance and the rest of it,” Wilson begins, according to Goal.
“I think it’s a very, very risky strategy. The biggest danger actually, is not just the individual player and the problems with them, it’s what it tells the rest of the squad,” Wilson continues.
-All the other players want an increase in their salary, so they measure against that player. If I was a player and I had an agent and I saw Erling Haaland get a nine-and-a-half-year deal of half a million pounds a week plus bonuses and I’m at 200, all of a sudden I actually say no, I want 350, 400,” the expert concludes.
