When Andrea Berta was tapped in as the new sporting director at Arsenal at the end of March, the Italian got to work at a wild pace. First, the signing of Martin Zubimendi was to be followed all the way in, then the Nico Williams signing was to be followed up. Not many days later, it was reported that Real Madrid intended to make Berta fail in the first mission.

Several English media reported earlier this winter that Arsenal were in pole position to sign Zubimendi, the player who last summer turned down a move to Liverpool. Then came the reports from the Spanish media that Real Madrid had decided to prioritize the signing of the Spanish international.

So what’s going on?

On Thursday, ESPN reports Arsenal management not only believes, but is sure the 26-year-old’s signature ends on the Gunners contract. Real Madrid’s charm offensive should not have hit Zubimendi enough to change course. This ends up in London as a new partner to Martin Ødegaard, it is reported.
