No expense is too small to cut for Jim Ratcliffe. Britain’s richest are cutting what is “unnecessary” costs at Manchester United, while with his other hand signing new construction projects in the hundred-million-pound class. The chaos of the last year with managers has cost United a scary amount without results. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager is now actually a financially logical good investment.

We let the English Goal draw the economic analysis: “There is also an economic motive to look inwards. United have spent £42 million in just over a year on bad hires. It cost £10.4 million to sack Ten Hag and his staff in October 2024, while two months later, United sacked director of football Dan Ashworth after just five months in the role, costing £4.1 million.”

“The hiring and dismissal of Amorim is expected to cost almost £27 million, as United paid off his contract at Sporting and now has to pay off the remaining 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford. United can ill afford another expensive hire after their total debt rose to a record £1.29 billion.”

Then it comes to Solskjaer, Carrick and Fletcher.

“Solskjaer and the other club legends who have moved into the coaching role are not after the money; They just want to help the club. Their love for United also means they will be more willing to work with, not against, leaders like Wilcox and recruitment director Christopher Vivell.”

“It may seem that reinstating Solskjaer or taking a chance on Fletcher or Carrick is a return to the days of Ed Woodward and undermines all the work Ratcliffe has done in reshaping the club’s structure in an attempt to align itself with the other top teams in Europe. But the INEOS boss and his colleagues at United have ended up building a structure that is likely to repel only the very best managers. They may want “best in class”, but are quite reluctant to pay for it. After two years of eating away at the club’s soul, it’s time to go back to the roots,” says the English media.

Even Ratcliffe should be able to figure out the logic of this.
