In a way, it is completely absurd that it has been a topic since last autumn that Arne Slot is fired as Liverpool coach. No one expected the Dutchman in his debut season to do better than Master Klopp’s finish, yet Slot gave Liverpool supporters a Premier League season they hadn’t experienced since the 2019/20 season. What has really ruined Slot’s fortune is the £440 million investment in new players this summer.

Because no matter how much Slot has reminded the critics that they also lost key players in this summer’s transfer market, £440 million governs expectations. Back-to-back titles were almost expected in the Premier League, now Liverpool risk going into next season without a Champions League ticket and the big revenues.

Football talker and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has already fired Arne Slot after the weekend’s 1-1 draw against relegation candidate Tottenham.

“It’s worrying, considering what Liverpool are doing this season. The most important point is how worrying it is for the manager. I think there is a difference between most people’s support when it comes to what we see online compared to the supporters who are at the games. For much of this season, when people have turned against Arne Slot, the supporters at the matches have supported him. Even against the backdrop of what happened with Mo Salah, the next game was away at the San Siro, and the fans were shouting for Arne Slot, Carragher dosed on Sky Sports.

So why kick the Slot? Jamie Carragher talks about the change of mood that came after giving up points against Tottenham.

“It’s not easy for a Liverpool crowd to turn against a manager who has won a title less than a year earlier, but I felt there was a big shift on Sunday in terms of how the crowd felt about the team and the manager. The booing at the end, it was real booing from a disgruntled and unhappy fanbase. I think it will be very difficult now for Arne Slot to get them back. When you lose the supporters, it’s very difficult to get them back,” Carragher explains.

In other words, Arne Slot must deliver something really big in the coming months to not have the supporters against him – and an impossible situation for a coach to take into the new season.
