Saturday’s home defeat at the King Power Stadium against Oxford United on Saturday was Marti Cifuentes’ last game as Leicester manager.

Marti Cifuentes won 10 of his 29 league games as Leicester manager.

Marti Cifuentes has been sacked as manager of Leicester City after just six months in the position, with the club in the bottom half of the Championship table. The 43-year-old’s last game as manager was Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to weak Oxford United – Leicester’s 11th defeat in 29 league games under the Spaniard.

Cifuentes took over in July with the aim of leading Leicester back to the Premier League after the club’s second relegation in three years, but has now been sacked while they are in 14th place, six points clear of the play-off places.

“This has been a difficult decision and not something I have taken lightly,” Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said in a statement.

“I would like to thank Marti for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City. He gave his all for the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our goals.”

Cifuentes’ departure means Leicester are now looking for their sixth permanent manager since FA Cup winner Brendan Rodgers was sacked in April 2023.

Uneven results have marked Cifuentes’ time in charge at the King Power Stadium.

They have only had two consecutive league wins during the season, while their longest undecided streak was an eight-game run between late August and mid-October, which included five draws.

Leicester are 13 places and 31 points worse than Enzo Maresca’s champion-winning Championship side at the same point in the 2023-24 season.

They sit nine points above the relegation places, but with the threat of a points deduction still hanging over them for alleged breaches of spending rules in the 2023-24 season, their real position in the table remains uncertain.

“I believe this is the right step now to improve performance and results, and to act in the best interest of Leicester City Football Club,” Srivaddhanaprabha added.

“Marti leaves us with our gratitude and our best wishes for the future.”

Leicester have announced that first-team manager Andy King will take over on an interim basis, until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Leicester’s next Championship game is at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
