Many were sceptical when Vardy signed for Cremonese in the summer. “You must be one of the doubters,” said a slightly annoyed Jamie Vardy in his first press conference as a Cremonese player in September. “You’re one of those people I have to prove wrong.” Vardy was responding to a reporter’s claim that fans in Italy may be “a little skeptical” of players approaching the age of 40. Vardy responded with four goals in his first ten games for the newly promoted Serie A club. Still, even a Premier League champion couldn’t save coach Davide Nicola’s job.

On Wednesday, Cremonese announced that they had fired the coach with immediate effect. The club also brought in Morten Thorsby on loan in February, the Norwegian international scored on his debut against Atalanta, but has not experienced a single win in his first six games (until a loss, one draw).

Jamie Vardy has only one poor goal since December, it simply doesn’t work for Cremense. With a fourth defeat in a row and three points below the relegation zone, the club has made the decision that Nicola must go.

The 53-year-old Davide Nicola joined Cremonese in the summer, like Vardy, the Italian got 30 games in the job with a points average of 0.8.
